Type Approval is a mandatory regulatory process overseen by the NCA to ensure that all telecommunications and radio equipment used or marketed in Somalia meets established technical and safety standards. Any device that connects to a public telecommunications network or intentionally transmits radio waves must be type approved before it can be imported, sold, or deployed in Somalia.
Equipment that undergoes type approval is tested to confirm it operates effectively, does not cause harmful interference, and complies with national and international standards. This protects consumers, promotes fair competition, and ensures the quality of devices connected to Somali networks.
Equipment Requiring Type Approval
Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (RTTE) subject to type approval includes — but is not limited to — mobile handsets, tablets, IP phones, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices, NFC readers, broadcast and satellite equipment, base stations, routers, modems, switches, and vehicle tracking devices.
Who Can Apply
Type Approval can be requested by authorized importers, licensed operators, local and international manufacturers, and any public or private organization in Somalia wishing to import equipment for their own use. Compliance is a legal obligation and a prerequisite for market entry.
How to Apply
Complete the Type Approval application form and submit it by email to typeapproval@nca.gov.so. Each application must be accompanied by technical documentation of the equipment, a valid Type Approval Certificate issued by an NCA-recognised National Regulatory Authority, and proof of payment of the application fee. A separate form is required for each type of equipment. Complete applications are processed within 30 calendar days.
